Five-year-old children are typically in kindergarten – a magical time as they may be starting to sound out and read simple words. There are lots of fun books on the market to keep them entertained. Here are a few they’re sure to love:
The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle
As you can imagine, this caterpillar eats a lot. Your child will love following along this classic tale as the caterpillar prepares and gradually transitions to a butterfly. Interactive, die cut pages make for a fun, engaging storytime with this beautifully illustrated board book.
Interrupting Chicken by David Ezra Stein
No one likes to be interrupted and, in this story, dad tries to teach this valuable lesson to his daughter. It isn’t so easy for her though if she doesn’t like how the story is ending. This 2011 winner of the Caldecott Medal features fun illustrations and is sure to please any child.
There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly by Simms Taback
The old lady who swallowed a fly doesn’t stop there, she swallows all kinds of creatures. This Caldecott Honor Book has inventive cutouts that show exactly what she’s put in her stomach. Kids love to read along with you as she continues eating her way through the book.
I Want My Hat Back by Jon Klassen
This book features a bear who’s very sad that he’s lost his hat. He starts searching for it but no one seems to have seen it, until… he finds the thief. Sparse but adorable illustrations will have your child asking to read it again and again.
The True Story of the Three Little Pigs by Jon Scieszka
This hilarious take on what really happened with the three little pigs will keep your child in stitches. Told from the point of view of the wolf (Alexander T. Wolf, that is) you learn that it was all just an innocent mistake. He was only trying to borrow sugar and the rest happened accidentally.
